Worldline Strengthens Its Position as a Trusted Partner for Banks and Merchants Preparing for the Digital Euro
Worldline has been selected by the European Central Bank to participate in the Eurosystem’s digital euro pilot project. The company will serve as both an acquiring service provider and a technical service provider.
Mission: supporting banks and financial institutions throughout the digital euro value chain, from infrastructure connectivity and transaction processing to the integration of banking channels and merchant acceptance.
Worldline will provide the infrastructure, processing, and integration capabilities necessary for the efficient, large-scale deployment of the digital euro, explains Pierre-Antoine Vacheron, CEO of Worldline. “Our strength lies in our ability to connect the digital euro to the payment solutions already in use across Europe.”
12-Month Pilot Project
“By combining connectivity, processing, acceptance, and orchestration, we enable our clients to accelerate their transition, simplify their operations, and offer a secure, intuitive, and reliable payment experience.”
This pilot project, scheduled to launch in the second half of 2027 and lasting 12 months, is designed to evaluate digital euro payment journeys across various use cases for consumers and merchants, including in-store NFC, e-commerce, and m-commerce, thereby helping to validate the operational maturity of the future ecosystem.
Thanks to Worldline’s shared platform, participating banks and merchants will be able to accelerate deployment, reduce operational complexity, and avoid significant redundant investments, while benefiting from a consistent and interoperable approach across all markets.
Via Luxembourg
One of Worldline’s key strengths lies in its ability to orchestrate the digital euro alongside existing payment infrastructures, including instant payments, account-to-account transfers, cards, e-wallets, and national systems.
Worldline is participating in the pilot project through its Luxembourg-based payment institution—which holds our pan-European license—in close collaboration with the Central Bank of Luxembourg (BCL), as well as through PAYONE in Germany and Austria.
