AI Is Transforming Tasks and the Skills Required Faster Than It Is Eliminating Jobs
AI is transforming the world of work. A white paper from the Adecco Group highlights the need for coordinated management of hybrid workforces.
“The next phase of the AI era will be marked by a redefinition of how work is organized: it will involve understanding what needs to be done by people, what can be entrusted to AI agents, how skills are evolving, what skills we’ll need tomorrow, and how value is created and measured. ”
This is the crux of the hybrid transformation of the world of work,” explains Denis Machuel, CEO of The Adecco Group. And, he continues, this is precisely Adecco’s mission.
In the white paper “On the Threshold: AI, the Future of Work, and the Rise of Hybrid Labor Markets,” published in partnership with the consulting firm Altermind, we learn that AI is transforming tasks and the required skills faster than it is eliminating jobs. Three and a half years after the launch of ChatGPT, the employment rate across the 38 OECD member countries remains at a record high of 72.1%, while unemployment is near its all-time low of 4.9%.
Rethinking Processes
At the same time, the large-scale deployment of AI remains limited: fewer than one in ten companies has integrated AI on a large scale into its core business processes. More specifically, 20% of European companies have integrated AI on a large scale into their core business processes, leaving significant potential for transforming the world of work.
Above all, the report shows that companies that are rethinking their processes around hybrid human-AI systems are outperforming those that view AI as merely a productivity tool. AI does not merely automate work; it creates new categories of jobs focused on orchestration, supervision, and integration.
Redesign and Orchestration
“While technology creates new capabilities, it is people who transform them into value,” continues Denis Machuel. “The hybridization of the world of work enables this value creation to be deployed on a large scale. We are ready to play a leading role in the human dimension of AI-driven transformation.”
According to the Adecco Group, the main challenge today is tosupport organizations in redesigning and orchestrating work among humans, AI agents, and physical AI, in order to facilitate the workforce’s transition and improve productivity.
“The companies that will get the most out of AI will not be those with the best models or robots, but those that can effectively rethink their workflows, operational models, and workforce management systems,” the report concludes.
