OVHcloud is the first cloud provider in the world to use quantum encryption in its SSL certificates
The European hosting provider is rolling out SSL certificates based on quantum random number generation. Already in the process of being deployed, quantum encryption will be offered free of charge to all web customers.
Nearly five million websites will benefit from this innovation by the end of October! As a member of the Internet Security Research Group, OVHcloud has long supported efforts to help developers make the web more secure. Hosted websites automatically benefit from an SSL certificate generated by the Let’s Encrypt certification authority.
Now, these certificates are even more secure thanks to the use of random numbers generated by a quantum process (quantum entropy). This technology enhances the reliability of encryption keys and ensures the confidentiality of exchanges.
Truly unpredictable random numbers
Traditionally, the generation of random numbers in electronic circuits can, over time, become biased and predictable, which can weaken IT security. Conversely, quantum physics makes it possible to generate truly unpredictable random numbers, thanks in particular to the entanglement of photons.
This QRNG (Quantum Random Number Generation) technology was developed using the quantum computer designed by Quandela, which OVHcloud has acquired. Protected by patent, OVHcloud’s innovation — “certifiable randomness” — illustrates the work of the group’s R&D teams.
Five million websites
“Using quantum computing to enhance the security level of encryption certificates is not only a world first in technology that aims to anticipate the evolution of threats, but it also embodies our vision of innovation at OVHcloud,” says Julien Levrard, CISO, OVHcloud.
OVHcloud is thus becoming the first cloud provider in the world to use quantum computing in its SSL certificates to enhance the security of hosted websites. Already in the process of being rolled out, these new certificates will be offered free of charge to all of the Group’s web customers. Compatible with the entire current web browser ecosystem, they contribute to strengthening the trusted cloud.
In total, nearly five million websites hosted by OVHcloud will benefit from QRNG by the end of October 2025.
