For 40 years, AIX has supported many of the world’s most critical enterprise systems
Invisible but essential reliability. AIX, IBM’s Unix, which has established itself in critical environments, is now tackling equally critical applications for AI.
Ready for the future. In sectors such as banking, healthcare, public administration, and transportation, AIX has always delivered the stability, security, and operational continuity that organizations expect from their critical environments.
Today, as businesses evolve toward increasingly data- and AI-driven operations, AIX continues to advance as an intelligent, automated platform designed to meet these new needs.
A solid foundation for developing skills and performance
Anniversary. Within the AIX community, many professionals trace their technical beginnings back to this platform. It was with AIX that they learned the fundamentals of enterprise administration—from SMIT to logical volume management—and gained valuable experience in managing production environments.
This long-standing familiarity is still part of the value of AIX, enabling organizations to benefit from proven skills and cutting-edge operational expertise.
Invisible but essential reliability
Behind the scenes, AIX has been used in environments requiring a high level of stability and security. These include financial systems handling large volumes of daily transactions, clinical systems requiring constant availability, and public sector environments with specific security requirements. Other examples include airline and logistics systems coordinating complex operations.
AIX has also served as a platform for major infrastructure transitions. When Airbus took over the entire A220 program, the company migrated more than 100 interconnected systems within PLM, ERP, MES, and supplier environments. In collaboration with IBM, Airbus completed this migration in approximately 18 months while maintaining production. Results include simplified financial closing processes and increased engineer productivity.
The era of autonomy: a platform that evolves with customers
AIX is entering a new phase where automation and intelligence are at the heart of the user experience. This includes:
- Extended automation with Ansible roles for patching, policy enforcement, and system operations, powered by Ansible Lightspeed based on watsonx.
- Access to a growing ecosystem of AI-dedicated libraries and frameworks, optimized for IBM Power10 and Power11. Increased open source extensibility, with more than 500 packages in the AIX toolkit and DNF-based package management for simplified administration.
These developments demonstrate the ongoing transformation of AIX into a platform designed to support more autonomous, data-driven operations.
