AWS introduces its Just Walk Out technology at Faim in Lille

AWS is trialing its Just Walk Out service in Lille. The Amazon subsidiary, which initially launched its own cashierless convenience stores, is now offering this technology to third-party partners. Flunch is trialing it at Faim.

Faim, a new fast food concept from Flunch in Lille. No cash registers. Using computer vision, object recognition, advanced sensors and cameras, and machine learning algorithms to accurately track purchases, the technology allows customers to be tracked throughout their shopping journey. When leaving, customers simply present their bank card at the terminal, where they are automatically recognized and charged for their purchases.

Streamlining the journey

It’s all based on Just Walk Out, the AI-powered software suite that allows customers to enter and leave a store without going through the checkout. This is a first in Europe. “We were looking for a partner who was very open to experimentation. Flunch was determined to be the first player to deploy this technology in the market,” explains Anthony Leggett, Director/GM, Just Walk Out Technologies, AWS.

Faim’s goal: to get closer to customers in city centers with a high-quality, affordable dining experience while streamlining their shopping experience as much as possible, in particular by eliminating the need to wait at the checkout.

A new milestone

Today, Just Walk Out technology is used in more than 290 stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Its arrival in France marks a new stage in the rollout of this technology.

The technology offers four advantages across all types of stores:

  • present your bank card or smartphone at the entrance, take the items of your choice, and leave the store without going through the checkout;
  • while shopping, the virtual basket is updated automatically: items are added when you pick them up and removed if you put them back
  • the system identifies the customer by associating their payment method with a temporary digital code, which serves as a unique signature;
  • no biometric data is collected or used.

The accuracy of Just Walk Out even allows you to shop in a group: enter with several people using a single card, and the system will generate a single receipt for all purchases.
